New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced his two-day state visit to Bhutan on Friday morning, where he received a warm welcome from Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay at the Paro Airport.

Before departing, the Prime Minister expressed his anticipation for various programs aimed at strengthening the partnership between India and Bhutan. He looked forward to engaging in discussions with the King of Bhutan, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.

Originally scheduled earlier but postponed due to inclement weather, Modi’s visit to Bhutan holds significance as one of his final foreign trips before the upcoming general election in India. Posters and billboards across Bhutan welcomed him in anticipation of his arrival.

The trip provides an opportunity for both nations to exchange views on bilateral and regional matters, aiming to enhance their exemplary partnership for the benefit of the people.

Modi’s visit to Bhutan follows Bhutanese Prime Minister Tobgay’s recent visit to India, during which Modi pledged increased support for Bhutan’s development initiatives.

The joint statement issued after their meeting emphasized the strong friendship between India and Bhutan and pledged to further strengthen bilateral ties. India’s commitment to supporting Bhutan’s quest for high-income status and development aid were highlighted as key areas of focus during the visit.

During Prime Minister Tobgay‘s visit, Prime Minister Modi expressed India’s commitment to enhancing support for Bhutan’s 13th five-year plan. This included considering a request for an economic stimulus program aimed at bolstering Bhutan’s economy. Additionally, New Delhi’s development assistance would prioritize initiatives aimed at building infrastructure and enhancing connectivity within Bhutan.
