Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Rural Police have arrested two members of the Irani gang—Mustufa Jafri, 41, from Mumbai, and Shakhi Akbarali Jafri, 58, from Thane—for impersonating policemen and defrauding people of their money.

The two suspects, apprehended on Tuesday, are allegedly involved in nearly 20 offences in Gujarat, 26 in Maharashtra, and one in Uttar Pradesh. The total number of offences linked to the Irani gang is estimated to be around 100.

According to police sources, on July 2, the duo visited Sanand, an industrial town in Gujarat, and cheated a man of ₹25,000 by pretending to assist him with a deposit slip. They later traveled to Viramgam, where they duped another person of ₹73,000.

A senior police official told media that the gang typically impersonates police officers, targeting elderly women. They stop their victims under the pretext of a recent robbery, instructing them to remove their gold ornaments for safety, before escaping with the valuables.

“We are coordinating with our counterparts in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, as the suspects have committed crimes in those states as well. We expect to arrest more members of the Irani gang soon,” the official said.

He further added, “In addition to other sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, we have invoked Section 111 of the BNS, which allows for capital punishment for running an organized criminal gang.”
