Plane Crash in Ahmedabad: Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani Among 278 Confirmed Dead
In the tragic plane crash that occurred in Ahmedabad on Thursday, June 12, former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the 278 people who lost their lives, including 241 passengers. Following a confirmed DNA match, his mortal remains will be handed over to his family on Sunday, June 16 at 11:30 AM. The state funeral, with full political honors, will be held later in the evening at 5 PM in Rajkot.
The Gujarat government has announced a statewide day of mourning on June 16, 2025 (Monday), to honor the late leader.
Family Departs for Civil Hospital to Receive Remains
Vijay Rupani’s wife Anjali Rupani, son Rishabh Rupani, daughter Radhika Rupani, and other family members have departed from Gandhinagar to Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad to receive his body. Tribute posters have been displayed at various locations across Ahmedabad Airport, honoring the late former Chief Minister.
Condolence Meetings Scheduled
- June 17: A public prayer meeting will be held at Race Course Ground, Rajkot, from 3 PM to 6 PM.
- June 19: Another prayer meeting is planned at Helipad Ground, Gandhinagar, from 9 AM to 12 PM.
- June 20: A final condolence gathering will take place at the BJP headquarters from 4 PM to 6 PM.
Final Viewing Arrangements Underway in Rajkot
Preparations for the final viewing of Vijay Rupani’s mortal remains are in progress at his residence in Prakash Society, Rajkot. Once the DNA confirmation process was completed, the family is expected to travel from Gandhinagar to Rajkot. Union Minister Parshottam Rupala visited the family residence to offer condolences.
Confirmed DNA Match and Transport to Rajkot
Gujarat’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed the DNA match of Vijay Rupani. The match was established on Sunday, June 15 at 11:10 AM. His body will be transported to Rajkot by this evening, where arrangements for the final rites are already underway.
Update on Victim Identification
Dr. Rajnish Patel, Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital, stated during a press conference that DNA matching has been completed for 92 deceased victims brought to the hospital. However, due to some duplication in remains, the actual number of identified individuals is 87. So far, 47 bodies have been handed over to their respective families. These updates are vital for the families and relief officials managing the aftermath of the crash.
