World Heritage Site: The ‘Moidams‘, a unique mound-burial system of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, marking the first cultural property from Northeast India to receive such recognition. This announcement was made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) in India.

India had proposed the inclusion of ‘Moidams’ for the 2023-24 UNESCO World Heritage List. These distinctive burial mounds, notable for their pyramid-like design, were used by the Tai-Ahom dynasty, which governed Assam for around six centuries.

Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat expressed gratitude to UNESCO and the World Heritage Committee for recognizing the universal value of ‘Moidams’, describing the day as “etched in golden letters” for Assam and the Northeast’s cultural heritage.

The Chief Minister of Assam also expressed excitement and gratitude on social media, calling it a significant achievement for Assam. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee members, and the people of Assam for their support. He highlighted that the Moidams of Charaideo reflect the spiritual beliefs, cultural heritage, and architectural skills of Assam’s Tai-Ahom community.

This recognition marks the first time a site from the Northeast has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under the Cultural Category. It is also Assam’s third World Heritage Site, following Kaziranga and Manas National Parks. The Chief Minister invited everyone to experience “Awesome Assam.”
