Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) shut down the Jai Siyaram Sweet Shop in Paldi after receiving complaints about mouldy sweets. The issue came to light when a customer discovered fungus in a packet of penda purchased for Raksha Bandhan. This traditional sweet shop, known for its festive offerings, faced further scrutiny when another customer reported similar findings.
The AMC’s health department was unable to inspect the shop immediately as it was closed on Raksha Bandhan, which is unusual since sweet shops typically remain open due to high demand. When the health team arrived again on Tuesday, they found the shop still closed, raising suspicions that the owner had been alerted and used the time to remove the tainted stock.
Operating in Paldi for years, the shop is now under investigation for failing to meet food safety standards. The health department has since sealed the shop and posted a notice for non-compliance with hygiene regulations.
