Ahmedabad’s Healthcare Boom: Surge in Large-Format Hospitals Amid Rising Lifestyle Diseases
As the World Health Organization (WHO) warns India about the increasing burden of lifestyle diseases becoming a leading cause of death, Ahmedabad is witnessing a significant expansion of large-format and standalone hospitals, reflecting a nationwide trend.
Major Expansion Plans
Medical experts estimate that Ahmedabad will add approximately 3,000 private hospital beds over the next 5 to 6 years, effectively doubling its current capacity. This growth, spanning both large and mid-sized hospitals, is expected to attract healthcare investments ranging from Rs 2,000 to 3,000 crore.
Leading Players Enter the Market
The Adani Group has announced plans to establish multi-speciality hospitals in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, with around 1,000 beds allocated to Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, Zydus Hospital is investing Rs 300 crore in a 300-bed multi-speciality facility in Eastern Ahmedabad.
“We are developing a new hospital in the Ghodasar area to meet the growing demand for quality healthcare. A WHO study highlights that lifestyle diseases have surpassed infectious diseases in India,” said Dr. V. N. Shah, founder of Zydus Hospital.
Dr. Shah further emphasized the urgent need for specialized services in cardiology, oncology, and neurology, pointing out that major healthcare players like the Adani Group are also launching large and standalone hospitals across the city.
Current Hospital Landscape
According to Dr. Viren Shah, Vice President of the Ahmedabad Hospitals & Nursing Homes Association (AHNA), approximately 50 new private hospitals with a minimum capacity of 25 beds opened in Ahmedabad last year.
Among the 1,100-1,200 AHNA-registered hospitals in the city:
- 70% have fewer than 15 beds
- 20% have 16-50 beds
- 5% have 51-100 beds
- Only 13 hospitals have more than 100 beds
Expansion of Existing Facilities
Several established hospitals are also expanding their infrastructure to meet growing healthcare demands. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, a trust-run facility, has increased its bed capacity from 127 to 225 while enhancing its services with AI-driven technology and full-time specialists across key departments such as gynaecology, neurology, oncology, cardiology, and paediatrics.
“We have expanded to 225 beds and plan to add more by constructing a new facility on campus,” said Dr. Manesh Agarwal, CEO of Jivraj Mehta Hospital.
Dr. Bharat Gadhavi, Regional Director of HCG Hospitals (Gujarat & Rajasthan), highlighted the increasing prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as cancer, underscoring the necessity for specialized medical care. “We recently launched a large-format hospital on SG Highway alongside our existing facility in Mithakhali to address the growing healthcare needs.”
With the rising burden of lifestyle diseases, Ahmedabad’s healthcare sector is undergoing rapid transformation, positioning itself as a critical hub for advanced medical services.
