Ahmedabad: The Kalupur Railway Station in the city is undergoing a major redevelopment, which will require the closure of a key 200-metre stretch between Sarangpur Circle and the station for three years. The closure will begin on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, and last until September 10, 2027, as announced by a notification from the city police commissioner. During this period, the remaining side of the road will be converted into a one-way lane for vehicles heading towards the station. To alleviate traffic congestion, three alternative routes have been suggested.
Alternative Routes: Vehicles traveling from Sarangpur Circle to Kalupur Railway Station will be diverted through Sindhi Bazar and Panchkuva to access the main gate of the station. Vehicles leaving Kalupur Railway Station towards Sarangpur will use the one-way lane on their left.
Concerns of Local Businesses: The road closure and redevelopment project have raised concerns among local businesses and workers. Mitesh Patel, President of Kapad Mahajan, expressed worries about the impact on Sindhi Bazar, which is home to approximately 5,000 clothing shops. He highlighted issues such as inadequate parking facilities and the potential for traffic congestion and vehicle towing, which could negatively affect businesses.
Imran Khan, President of Gujarat Mazdoor Sangh, pointed out the challenges faced by porters due to the redevelopment. He voiced concerns about their job security and the need for more flexible work placements during the construction period. Despite the construction, the old entry gate of the station will remain open for passengers.
