IMD Monsoon Alert: Heavy Rain, Hail, and Strong Winds Forecast Across Several States
The southwest monsoon has entered the country and is advancing rapidly. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and strong winds in multiple states, including Gujarat and Maharashtra. Winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h are expected in some regions, potentially bringing relief from the intense heat.
Favorable Conditions for Monsoon Advancement
Over the next 2–3 days, conditions are favorable for monsoon progression over the southern Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, and parts of the Bay of Bengal. Around May 21, a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Karnataka coast, forming a low-pressure area by May 22. This system may intensify and move northward. A trough extends from central Punjab to northern Bangladesh, affecting several states en route.
Rain Expected Over the Next 7 Days
A cyclonic system is also observed over Assam and the northeastern Arabian Sea, indicating the likelihood of heavy rain with thunderstorms and winds at 30–50 km/h in several northeastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Nagaland over the next week.
Rain Alerts for Southern States
Light to moderate rain with lightning is expected in Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Karnataka. Over the next week, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana may also see rain and winds at speeds of 30–50 km/h.
Rain Alerts in Gujarat and Maharashtra
In western India, rain is forecasted for Goa and Maharashtra from May 19 to 24, and for Gujarat between May 22 and 24. Wind speeds in Goa may reach 50–60 km/h.
Central India to Witness Rain and Thunderstorms
States like West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Bihar are expected to experience rain with thunderstorms and winds up to 50 km/h. Rainfall in West Bengal is expected between May 19 and 21.
Hailstorm Alerts in Northern Hilly Regions
Rain with hailstorms is forecasted for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. From May 19 to 24, northwestern plains including Punjab, Haryana, and western Rajasthan are expected to receive rainfall and winds of up to 50 km/h. Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh are likely to see rain and storms between May 19 and 20.
Heatwave Alerts in Rajasthan and Odisha
A slight temperature drop (2–3°C) is observed in eastern India. However, Rajasthan and Odisha remain under a heatwave alert. Temperatures in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha range between 36–40°C.
Delhi NCR Weather to Change Over the Next 3 Days
In the past 24 hours, Delhi NCR saw a 2°C increase in minimum temperature and a 2°C drop in maximum temperature. From May 19 to 21, the region will have partly cloudy skies with chances of light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong dust-laden winds.
