Annual FASTag Pass: Government Plans for Public and Commercial Transport
To make public transportation more convenient, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is considering introducing an Annual FASTag Pass for state transport buses and private commercial vehicles. If implemented, this move will help millions of daily commuters avoid delays at toll plazas, making travel smoother and faster.
Nearly 20 Lakh Private Buses in India
According to data from the Bus and Car Operators Confederation of India, around 92% of buses in India are privately operated, totaling nearly 20 lakh vehicles. While about 5 lakh people travel by air daily, 2.4 crore use railways, and 40 crore travel by bus—out of which 32 crore passengers depend on private buses. This highlights that bus transport remains the backbone of India’s mobility.
Proposal for Annual FASTag Pass for Buses and Taxis
The Confederation raised concerns over inadequate facilities for commercial transport. In response, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari assured that just like the annual FASTag pass for private cars, a similar facility for state transport buses, private buses, and taxis is under consideration. Since commercial vehicles operate more frequently, the annual pass fee will likely be higher. The minister confirmed that a detailed study on this proposal is already underway.
