Cricket: The chief selector emphasized the importance of Kohli’s experience to India’s T20 squad, highlighting the strength of the middle order.

During a press conference in Mumbai to discuss the T20 World Cup squad, India’s chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar was queried about concerns regarding Virat Kohli’s strike rate. While Agarkar didn’t specifically address whether the question pertained to Kohli’s performance against spin, he emphasized Kohli’s excellent form in the IPL and indicated no apprehensions in that regard.

Currently, Kohli stands as the second highest run-scorer in the IPL season, amassing 500 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 147.49. However, among 16 players who have scored at least 100 runs against spin in IPL 2024, Kohli’s strike rate of 135.66 ranks as the fifth lowest.

Agarkar acknowledged the value of Kohli’s experience and highlighted efforts to bolster the middle order’s power. He emphasized the importance of having seasoned players like Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both of whom have considerable World Cup experience.

Addressing concerns about facing spin, Agarkar revealed strategic selections aimed at enhancing the team’s performance in the middle overs. He mentioned the inclusion of left-handers and praised Surya Kumar Yadav’s prowess as the top-ranked T20 player globally.

In a recent IPL match against Gujarat Titans, Kohli displayed exceptional performance against spin, scoring 70 not out off 44 balls. His innings included scoring 61 runs at a striking rate of 179 against prominent spinners like Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, and Sai Kishore.

Following this outstanding performance, Kohli dismissed criticism about his strike rate against spin, emphasizing his focus on contributing to the team’s victory. He refuted suggestions from armchair critics, emphasizing his extensive experience and ability to deliver consistently over 15 years.
