IPL 2024: Hardik Pandya will captain the Mumbai Indians in the upcoming Indian Premier League season, replacing Rohit Sharma, as confirmed just before the commencement of the 2024 tournament.

Hardik Pandya is returning for his second stint with Mumbai Indians, having initially debuted in the 2015 season. After a swift ascent in the team, he departed just before the 2022 season. Subsequently, he joined Gujarat Titans, securing an IPL victory in the team’s inaugural season. In 2023, Hardik led the team to the IPL final but faced defeat against MS Dhoni‘s Chennai Super Kings.

In a pre-tournament interview on Star Sports, Pandya called on fans to rally behind the franchise. He expressed his commitment to making IPL 2024 an exhilarating season for Mumbai.

“I’m deeply thankful for the immense love and support from fans. It’s a blessing beyond words,” he shared. “Returning to Mumbai Indians feels like coming back to where it all began. From my journey as a young lad in Baroda to Mumbai, this city has taught me growth, instilling in me humility and resilience. The city’s love and teachings are invaluable to me, shaping me into the cricketer I am today. Mumbai always challenges you to be better, and now with the IPL, I have returned home after 2 years,” expressed Pandya.

“I seek the same backing from our fans to propel us towards victory,” he urged. “Rest assured, I’ll ensure a thrilling season that every supporter will relish. It’s a journey we’ll all enjoy together,” he added.

Mumbai Indians brought back Pandya in an all-cash deal with Gujarat Titans, where the all-rounder had been captaining for the last two seasons after leaving Mumbai Indians. Pandya won the IPL title in his first try as a captain and then reached the final in the next season. To accommodate Pandya in the team, Mumbai were forced to sell Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

MI would hope for a smooth transition this season. It is expected that this will be Rohit Sharma‘s final season with the franchise.
