G7 Summit Focus: Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the G7 Summit in Italy, focusing on representing the concerns of Global South countries. He highlighted India’s commitment to voicing these priorities on the world stage, emphasizing the country’s G20 presidency and the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member. Modi also stressed the importance of international governance in AI during the G20 Summit hosted by India.

On the second day of the summit, Modi participated in an outreach session on AI, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. He held discussions with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He portrayed India’s recent elections as a celebration of democracy and framed his electoral victory as a triumph for democracy worldwide.

On the first day of the summit, held at Borgo Egnazia in Italy, G7 leaders, including representatives from Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK, the US, and the EU, reached a political agreement to provide $50 billion in loans for Ukraine, using interest from frozen Russian assets.

On energy — another theme of the Outreach Session — Modi said India’s approach in the field of energy is also based on four principles: “availability, accessibility, affordability and acceptability”.

    • He also met US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in pull-aside meetings Friday on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy.
    • He met G7 leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, UK PM Rishi Sunak, Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni among others on the margins of the Summit.
    • He also met Pope Francis and invited him to India.
