New Delhi: Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu emphasized that his country values its relationship with India, viewing New Delhi as a key partner in trade, development, and regional security. Arriving in New Delhi for his first bilateral visit, Muizzu reassured that Maldives would not take any action that could undermine India’s security, despite strengthening ties with other nations. While he did not mention China by name, Muizzu underscored his ‘Maldives First’ policy, which aims to diversify international relations and reduce dependence on any single country, stressing that these efforts would not come at India’s expense.

Addressing concerns raised by his electoral campaign’s ‘India Out’ rhetoric, Muizzu clarified that while he fulfilled his promise to remove foreign military personnel from Maldives, India remains an essential partner. He highlighted that the relationship between the two nations is longstanding and rooted in shared values and interests.

Additionally, Muizzu urged Indian tourists to return, acknowledging their vital role in the Maldives‘ economy.

The visit follows a diplomatic row last year, after controversial remarks by Maldivian ministers about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a subsequent request for the removal of Indian military personnel stationed on Maldivian soil.

Despite these issues, Muizzu reaffirmed that India continues to play a pivotal role in the Maldives’ regional development projects, including infrastructure and water management initiatives.
